Moirang bandh threatened over delayed road projects
BPR, 10th Oct: Strongly condemning the delay in commencing road projects, funds of which have been withdrawn fraudulently, Moirang Kendra Apunba Meira Paibi Ima Lup (MAMPIL) and Kege Moirang Kanba Lup (KEMKAL) have warned of launching Moirang bandh along with different forms of agitation from October 14 onwards if the road projects are not initiated at the earliest.
On Thursday, people of Moirang assembly constituency staged a sit-in protest at Moirang Keithel demanding immediate commencement of the road projects as per norms. Shops and business establishments in Moirang Keithel remained closed on during the protest. Members of Moirang CD Block E-Rickshaw Cooperative Society, United Diesel Auto-rickshaw Owners & Drivers’ Association, Moirang Bazar Rickshaw Pullers’ Cooperative Society, women vendors of Moirang Keithel and members or MAMPIL and KEMKAl also participated in the protest. Police prevented several students from participating in the protest by blocking their way. Interacting with media persons at the protest site, MAMPIL president K Padamo informed that MAMPIL and KEMKAL organised a public meeting at INA Ground on October 25 last year and submitted the resolutions adopted in the form of a charter of demands to the government on November 2. The organisations also submitted memorandums to the chief minister and the Moirang MLA on September 19 over the fund embezzlement of the road projects to be taken up in the constituency.
In the memorandum, they served September 30 as deadline for initiating the road projects while cautioning of launching agitations from October 1. In the meantime, a councillor of Moirang Municipal Council issued a press statement on September 29 with the intent to mislead the public and defame the Meira Paibi organisations and other CSOs of Moirang AC, she said while terming it as unfortunate.
MAMPIL general secretary N Thaba also denounced the chairperson of Moirang Municipal Council who gave assurance of starting necessary works for mending potholes along with some partial blacktopping from September 29. MAMPIL and people of Moirang want good road with standard quality but not some mending works, she said and added that people of Moirang are ready to renovate the road on their own expenses if the authority would not be able to do the works properly. Moreover, the road repair work as assured by the chairperson has not started till date, she said.
The secretary further said that government schools and colleges as well as hospitals in Moirang are being left unattended by the government. Public voices are also left unheard as if Moirang is not a part of Manipur, Thaba expressed.
She demanded the authority concerned to initiate the road projects at the earliest failing which they would launch different forms of agitation including Moirang bandh from October 14 onwards.
Mention may be made here that MAMPIL and KEMKAL have been demanding the government to transfer PWD AE of Moirang and termination of service; early conclusion of vigilance probe against PWD EE and Moirang MLA’s private secretary; renovation of Moirang Lamkhai to Sendra Road with standard quality; improvement of CHCs, schools and colleges in Moirang AC; and transfer of PHED AE of Moirang division.
