UKHRUL, 10th Oct: With less than a week’s time to go for the forthcoming state-level Shirui Lily festival, hectic groundwork for arrangements are going on, in right earnest for the inaugural venue at Shirui village and other major venues of TNL Ground and Bakshi Ground in Ukhrul district headquarters.
On Thursday, an official team comprising Tourism Corporation chairman MLA Dr Ranjan, District Level Co-Ordination Committee chairman MLA Khashim Vashum, Cultural Subcommittee chairman MLA Leishiyo Keishing, and Shirock chairman MLA Alfred Khanngam Arthur conducted physical inspection of the three main venues of the inaugural function at Shirui Vangayar Ground, cultural events at TNL Ground and Shirock music events at Bakshi Ground Dungrei, to ensure timely completion of the arrangements.
Ukhrul DC Joseph Pauline Kamson, Kamjong DC Zuringla Kengoo, Ukhrul SP Worngam Ningshen, Police housing engineers, Art & Culture department officials and others, accompanied the official team.
Later, in the evening, MLA Khashim Vashum convened a joint meeting with all the district level officers (DLOs) representing different departments at Ukhrul DC office chamber ostensibly to discuss matters related to the upcoming festival. However, what actually transpired during the meeting is yet to be known.
In a brief interaction with some newspersons ahead of the meeting, MLA Khashim said that an inspection of the ongoing preparation works was done and were found satisfactory and further exuded hope of completing all the works in time.
The MLA also appealed to the civil society organisations, different state departments and the public of the district to extend optimum cooperation to the state government for hassle-free and successful celebration of the festival.
Meanwhile, in a separate interaction with The People’s Chronicle, a source from the district level co-ordination committee disclosed that the groundwork were going on smoothly and that the work forces were also instructed by the official team for completion of the arrangements latest by October 14.
In a special reference to the ongoing works at Shirui village, the source stated that the permanent stage, which is under construction, is almost 80 per cent complete, while ground levelling is being carried out by the PWD.
Shirui locals would be constructing a mandop-type roofed makeshift shelter for attendees, it said while adding that drainage is also being constructed along the pathway leading to the main venue.
A preliminary assessment for installation of tentages and other structures has commenced at TNL Ground where diverse cultural shows of different communities of the state would be performed, it further informed. At the same time, MLA Alfred Khanngam Arthur was also seen inspecting the work progress at Bakshi Ground, where structures and rooftops of the main stage and other amenities for hosting ShiRock event, have been done already.
Preparation for installation of a permanent lighting system at the ground was also in progress. Reading on past experiences, a crowd of tens of thousands of domestic and international attendees/visitors are expected to turn up for this year’s edition of the four-day festival.
The festival, which is celebrated in honour of the world-famed unique Shirui Lily, is normally held in May. However, it has been scheduled for October 16 to19, on account of the Lok Sabha polls, held earlier this year.
As usual, this year's edition will also witness an array of colourful cultural shows and entertainments showcasing local musical talents, along with Miss Lily beauty pageant and other competitive events.
Expectedly, another major crowd puller of the extravaganza would be the ‘ShiRock’ musical event wherein Scottish rock band, ‘Nazareth’ and American rock band, ‘Extreme’ would be performing on October 16 and 19 respectively.
