CAU aided Kwatha aims to become Litchi village

IMPHAL, 10th Oct: With the objective of promoting Kwatha village as a Litchi village, CAU Imphal team led by its vice-chancellor Dr M Premjit initiated Litchi plantation programme in the village located at the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district on Thursday.
Prior to the plantation programme, CAU directorate of research in association with All Manipur Progressive Farmers’ Association (AMPFA) also organised one-day training cum interaction programme on ‘Importance of quality seed production and popularisation/propagation of Litchi farming’ at the village.
Dr Premjit and Kwatha Khullakpa N Kamal attended the training cum interaction programme as chief guest and president respectively. CAU director of instruction Dr S Basanta, AMPFA president S Ratankumar and CAU deputy director of research Dr Th Robindro were also present as guests of honour.
CAU department of horticulture professor Dr RK Dilip spoke on scientific cultivation of Litchi and CAU College of Agriculture assistant professor Dr Ng Joykumar on plot preparation as resource persons.
Dr M Premjit said that self-reliance in food production will not be achieved unless farmers increase their productivity and income. The vice chancellor Premjit urged the villagers to strive for producing good number of Litchi fruits and assured that CAU will definitely help them in increasing their income. Emphasising on the benefits of integrated farming system, he advised them to incorporate beekeeping alongside Litchi farming and added that honey sourced from Litchi is among the best. He then appealed to all to make Kwatha a Litchi village. AMPFA president Ratankumar observed that maximum of the people in the state are farmers and improving the agriculture and horticulture sector can bring self-sufficiency in food production for the state. Later, the participants along with the villagers planted Litchi plants in the village.
