FTC sentences drug peddler to 13 yrs RI

IMPHAL, 8th Oct: The fast track court of Special Judge ND&PS on Tuesday sentenced a drug peddler to 13 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) along with a fine of Rs 2 lakh.
Md Sahabuddin (40), s/o Md Nizamuddin of Lilong Tairel Makhong was convicted by the same court on October 1 on the charges of smuggling drugs along Imphal-Jiribam road.
On Tuesday, the convict was produced in the court by a security team from Sajiwa Central Jail for the sentence hearing during which Special PP M Raichand contended that the drugs seized from Sahabuddin would not only have affected the life of the people but also led to the ruin of the youth. As such, he prayed the Court to award the maximum quantum of punishment under Section 21 (C) and 22 (B) of the ND &PS Act.
However, the defence counsel argued that Sahabuddin was a married man and the sole breadwinner of the family. Thus, he appealed to the Court to merge the two sentences of the crimes he had committed.
After listening to both sides, the Court sentenced Sahabuddin to 13 years RI under Section 21 (C) of the ND &PS Act along with a fine of Rs 1,30,000 and to 7 years RI under Section 22 (B) of the Act along with a fine of Rs 70,000. It ordered Sahabuddin to serve the two sentences simultaneously and to pay a total fine of Rs 2 lakh within 4 months. If the convict fails to pay the fine within the stipulated time, he would have to serve an additional jail time of 2 years. It further stated that the time the convict had spent in jail prior to the sentencing i.e., 11 months and 15 days, would be commuted from the total sentence period.
