Weeklong RTI observance 2019 begins
IMPHAL, 7th Oct: A weeklong observance on Right to Information organised by Manipur Information Commission was inaugurated by Manipur State Planning Board chairman S Rajen at the auditorium of Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Chingmeirong here on Monday.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Rajen expressed that strengthening of the state information commission would help bring about positive changes in the state. RTI not only provides a way for elected representatives, officers, etc., to be accountable, but also helps in spreading awareness about government schemes.
He continued that the weeklong observance of RTI would help in informing the masses, apart from helping them gain benefits of the Act.
In his speech as president of the function, Commission State chief information commissioner O Sunil said that the main factor behind the fast-paced development of western countries was attributed to transparency. In Manipur’s context, RTI Act is not as strong as seen in other states. It needs to be noted that apart from changing their perspectives, the government and the officials concerned should work with RTI activists to bring about positive changes. He then urged for strengthening the RTI movement in the state.
Imphal East Adhyaksha Ng Bimola and Manipur Information Commission state information commissioner Dr S Ibomcha also attended the inaugural function as guests of honour.
Later, a state level workshop was organised.
