AJRTDU continues to tax trucks: AMDWA

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL, 7th Oct: All Jiribam Road Transport and Drivers’ Union (AJRTDU) continues to collect tax from trucks plying along Imphal-Jiribam road despite the announcement made by the union on February 4 last to stop taking tax, alleged All Manipur Drivers’ Welfare Association (AMDWA).
The union had on October 5 also announced during a press conference that loaded trucks will be allowed to ply along the highway without measuring weight but the union continues to check load of trucks apart from collecting tax, AMDWA secretary Sanjay Kshetrimayum told media persons on the sidelines of checking loaded trucks coming towards Imphal from Jiribam at Keithelmanbi Monday.
In view of bad conditions of bridges along Imphal-Jiribam road, AJRTDU declared not to collect tax from trucks and an announcement in this regard was also made few days back. Transporters were happy when the announcement was made as the union had been collecting tax ranging from Rs 100 earlier based on the load of trucks. However, the union continues to collect tax and measure weigth of loaded trucks, he said and asked if the union is able to repair weak bridges along Imphal-Jiribam road.
While alleging that collection of tax to allow movement of vehicles along Imphal-Jiribam highway is a corrupt practice, Sanjay said that such illegal taxes levied on trucks lead to skyrocketing of prices of goods in the state thereby causing immense suffering to common people. He also drew attention of state government to look into the matter.
