Court dismisses bail plea of Landhoni, daughter

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL, 7th Oct: In a key development to the mysterious death of Ningthoujam Babysana, the court of District & Sessions Judge, Imphal West has dismissed and disposed the latest bail application filed by Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School founder cum principal Pheiroijam Landhoni and her daughter Romita (co-ordinator), who are currently in judicial custody.
During the bail hearing conducted at Uripok Cheirap Court Complex on Monday, additional public prosecutor argued that the petitioners (Landhoni and Romita) who surrendered before the police on August 3 have no connection with the death of Babysana who was found dead hanging inside the school hostel and no concrete evidences against the two have been produced so far.
The counsel stated that there is no question of shying away from the case by the two as they are in the noble profession and pleaded the court to grant bail to the accused on medical grounds.
Intervening in the prayer, the additional public prosecutor stated that the main responsibility of the school is shouldered by the two and corporal punishment meted out by the school authority to its students is a gross violation of Child Safety in School guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court.
He stated that sexual assault against the deceased student cannot be ruled out as per the second post mortem report; and police are thoroughly investigating into the case and therefore there is the requirement of keeping the two suspects in judicial custody further to facilitate investigation. After listening to the arguments from both sides, the court observed that both might have committed crime under IPC Section 420/305 and Section 75 of JJ (Care & Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and that intense investigation is going on under IPC Section 305/302 to establish the truth behind the death of the minor student.
As there is the possibility of the prime witnesses of the case turning hostile, the court dismissed and disposed the bail application filed by the mother-daughter duo.
