JIRI, 4th Oct: Women vendors of Jiribam under the aegis of Jiri Ima Keithel Chaokhat Khongthang Lup organised a sit-in protest at Jiri Keithel on Friday decrying the frequent extortion activities along NH 37 in Nungba area.
Interacting with media persons at the protest site, Jiri Ima Keithel Chaokhat Khongthang Lup secretary Khumanlei said that some unidentified youth, who claimed to be UG cadres, extort Rs 300 to Rs 1000 from the women vendors, who carry out small trades of selling fresh vegetables. The extortion has been going on for over a month now, she said.
Recounting that the Lup had also organised a sit-in protest on September 20 demanding the government and security agencies to take up necessary measures to prevent such illegal activities, the secretary lamented that no initiatives have been taken up from the side of the government till date.
Demanding immediate halt to such activities and necessary measures from the authority, she warned of launching intense agitations in the forms of bandh or blockade along the highway if the situation remained unaddressed.
Women vendors belonging to different communities from neighbouring districts, who carry out small daily trades in Jiri Keithel, also participated in the protest.
