Tribal Food Melas mark culmination of Nutrition Month

KPI/SPT, 30th Sep: Tribal food melas that showcased traditional tribal cuisine, especially dishes and beverages prepared with locally grown organic and nutritious grains and vegetables, marked the culmination of National Nutrition Month observance in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts on Monday.
ADC Sadar Hills Kangpokpi organised the event for Kangpokpi district at Nute Kailhang, Kangpokpi town. ADC chairman Haokholal Hangshing and Kangpokpi Town Committee chairman Lunkhoseh Kipgen attended as chief guest and president respectively while ADC vice-chairman Thangjakam Misao and DC Kangpokpi Lalithambigai K were present as guests of honour.
A variety of local tribal culinary and beverages showcased in 20 different stalls opened during the food mela caught the attention of visitors and food lovers. Amongst others, Mao Daili stall was the main attraction which remained crowded throughout the day. A locally made traditional ‘rice beer’ was served in bamboo cup while all the staff of the stall were smartly attired in traditional dresses.
Stall of ICDS Cell Kangpokpi, one of the best performing departments during the nutrition month and Laikoiching stall were also among the stalls which caught the fancy of the visitors. Besides, stall showcasing various different traditional attires were opened.
ADC members, CEO T Manihar, National Nutrition Month district nodal officer Thangjalal Touthang, 38 AR Kangpokpi post commander, members of KTC, KYU and KWWO as well as officials from medical department took part in the function, where a free medical camp was also conducted.
Highlighting the objective of the month-long campaign ADC chairman Haokholal Hangsing said that Kangpokpi has vibrant and rich cuisines. However, people should pay sufficient attention to nutrition and healthy diet, he said and appealed to all to take more organic and nutritious foods for proper development of physical and mental health.
DC Lalthambigai K expressed appreciation to the officials of different department for their efforts towards making the campaign successful.
The tribal food mela held at mini stadium, Senapati was organised by ADC Senapati. ADC chairman A Kapani inaugurated the mela in the presence of ADC vice-chairman John Hingba, executive member A Rang, ADC members Rangpung John & Luba Thomas, CEO Regina Hongray, heads of departments and other ADC staff.
Speaking at the occasion, A Kapani explained that the campaign was aimed at creating awareness on the importance of nutritious foods for children up to 6 years of age, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers. He also said that further initiatives will be taken up to spread awareness at the grassroots level by organising events at different schools under the ADC.
Different stalls of vegetables, edibles, fruit juice made from local products, food items, bee wasps, local products and indigenous drinks were on sale at the mela. People from all walks of life visited the event.
