Campaigns launched ahead of Wildlife Week observance
TML, 28th Sep: Month-long campaigns consisting of different events have been kicked off at Chiulon and Khangjaron villages in Tamenglong district on Saturday in connection with 64th Wildlife Week observance. The event centred on poster campaign and awareness camps for protection of Amur Falcon would be carried out in different areas of Tamenglong and Noney districts. Competitions in painting, debating and quiz were also conducted for school students in different categories at United Builders School, Tamenglong. DFO Tamenglong Arun RS, ADC members Nehemia Panmei and Poukinlung Gangmei, and RFOs Kh Hitler and S Khogen attended the programmes as presidium members.
The DFO also inaugurated a water storage tank constructed under springshed development scheme at Chiulon village.
Mention may be made that two Amur Falcon birds were satellite tagged at Khangjaron village last year to track their flight path and study their migratory habits.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign organised by Tamenglong Forest Division along with the Rain Forest Club under the theme “The future of wildlife is in our hands", DFO Arun RS informed that Tamenglong district has been widely recognised in the world because of the Amur Falcon and there is need to conserve and protect this precious migratory bird.
Thanking Chiulon village authority for safeguarding and protecting Amur Falcon, he assured the village authority that maximum developmental projects would be initiated by the forest department in Chiulon village. Eco-tourism activities such as homestay to generate revenues for the village as well as for the Tamenglong district as a whole are some of the projects that the forest department is primarily focussing on, the DFO disclosed.
