Events organised as plastic-free campaign intensifies

IMPHAL, 28th Sep: Ahead of the October 2 deadline set for total prohibition on single used plastics, various events are being organised and planned for conduct in the coming days.
As a part of the campaign to create awareness on hazardous impacts of plastic to human and environment, ZEO Churachandpur would be organising a competition on maximum collection of plastic waste among schools under its jurisdiction from October 1 to 3.
A notification issued in this regard by ZEO CCpur said that all heads of schools should encourage their students to bring plastic waste materials like plastic bags, bottles, baskets and gunny bags from home to school and deposit the same in school campus. ZEO teams will inspect the plastic waste deposits and top three schools with maximum waste deposits will be given prizes.
On the other hand, the plastic waste deposits will be collected by waste management team or local garbage collectors, the notification said while asking heads of all schools to send photos or videos to the respective block AIs or DIs for onward submission to the SSA/SMA state project director.
In Bishnupur district, Plastic Waste Shramdhan was organised at Oinam Bazar on Saturday as a part of Swachhata Hi Seva.
The programme was attended by MAHUD commissioner M Joy, Oinam Municipal Council chairperson N Sanahal Devi, PHED additional chief engineer L Swamikanta Singh and MAHUD Joint Director RK Dayananda as presidium members.
Taking pledge to make Oinam Municipal Council area clean and plastic free marked the event.
Meanwhile, National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (zonal manager North East zone) organised a painting competition on the theme ‘Plastic Free Campaign’ at Lamdeng High School, Saturday as part of Swachhta HS Seva. Students of Lamdeng High School and Popular English School took part in the painting competition.
National Projects Construction Corporation Limited, Keithelmanbi senior manager PK Mukhopadhyay said that plastics cause pollution and random discard of the non-biodegradable plastic items clogs the drainage system and consequently affects the natural environment.
The painting competition on plastic free campaign was targeted to school children as the corporation felt that plastic free campaign would be successful if started from the grassroots level, he said, adding that the corporation will conduct social service and tree plantation drives as well soon.
