CCSK to commemorate first sitting of Manipur assembly

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL, 28th Sep: Committee of Civil Societies of Kangleipak (CCSK) would be commemorating the day when the first sitting of the Legislative Assembly of independent Manipur was held.
The commemoration would be held at GM Hall, here on October 18.
Informing this during a press conference held at its office here on Saturday, CCSK president Jeetendra Ningomba said that the first sitting of independent Manipur’s legislative assembly was held on October 18, 1948. The commemorative event is to be organised to revisit the stand of unity taken by the people of both hills and valley, who constituted the first legislative assembly after getting independence from the British by electing 18 representatives from hills and 15 from the valley.
Though many organisations observe the day most of the observances focus on suppression faced by the state and its people. But the observance of CCSK will focus on the independence and democratic government formed through public franchise in the once sovereign nation that thrived in the South East Asia region, he said while urging all for cooperation in making the observance a success.
CCSK convener S Premjit said that this is the fourth time CCSK would be commemorating the day and the conflict arising out of the merger of Manipur into the Indian Union would be discussed at the event. It is important to let the future generations know how Manipur had been flourishing as a sovereign nation and a booklet will also be released in this regard shortly after the commemoration, he said.
