Awareness prog on illicit poppy cultivation held
CCPUR, 24th Sep: Alarmed by widespread poppy cultivation carried out in hill areas of the state, the district administration of Churachandpur and district police in collaboration with Manipur police organised an awareness campaign against illicit poppy plantation at District Training Centre Hall here from 10.30 am Tuesday.
DGP LM Khaute attended opening function of the awareness programme as chief guest.
In his speech, LM Khaute said that widespread poppy cultivation in hill areas of the state has reached alarming proportion and this need to be stopped with multi-dimensional strategies to save the future generations of the society.
The earlier approach of mass destruction of poppy plants has produced some good results but mass awareness is a must so that people realise the adverse impact of cultivating such plants and encourage them to take up an alternative means of livelihood, he said, while adding that state government has been fighting relentlessly against cultivation of poppy as it is raw materials for many types of narcotic drugs.
Delivering the welcome note at awareness programme, DIG Range -III Kabib K pointed out that Churachandpur used to be a peaceful place in the state sometimes back but has become one of the most turbulent regions.
The programme was also attended by NAB SP W Basu Singh, Conservator of Forest (Southern Circle) Khamsuanmung Tawmbing and officers of Assam Rifles.
An interactive session was also held as part of the awareness programme and it was moderated by IGP Zone II Lunsieh Kipgen. The programme concluded with vote of thanks by SP Churachandpur Amrita Sinha.
