Attaining success grim sans respect for elders: Letpao

IMPHAL, 24th Sep: Stating that one’s ultimate happiness lies in helping others, and not in acquisition of wealth and properties for personal comfort, Youth Affairs and Sports minister Letpao Haokip has asserted that youngsters should always pay respect to elders and learn experiences in various forms such as valuable knowledge and societal norms as these will guide them towards the path of success.
Speaking as chief guest at the golden jubilee celebration of National Service Scheme (NSS) organised by State NSS Cell at Khuman Lampak auditorium here on Tuesday, Letpao observed that respect for others regardless of class and self-reliance are key to build a good society where there is no discrimination and youngsters who possess infinite energy should play a vital role to meet the goal.
He exhorted the youngsters to halt seeking living pretentious lives and instead keep focussing on becoming self-reliant individuals so that they could achieve success in life and contribute towards shaping a good society.
He maintained that a healthy society is not the one having maximum number of rich or well-learned people but it is the respect, compassion and humanity towards others that will ensure peace and development.
The minister also advised the youngsters to inculcate the value of being respectful and financially independent and work towards attaining the two intrinsic values from now on as time does not wait for anybody.
While expressing disappointment over the declining moral values in the society, he stated that the present trend of seeking tuition/coaching classes by students by spending large amount of money in their quest for getting high marks and good performance is not a good sign as this discourages the habit of reading books at homes.
The celebration function began with flagging off a rally wherein hundreds of NSS volunteers coming from different parts of the state took part. Commissioner (YAS) Bobby Waikhom and Director Dr Harmit Singh Pahuja also attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively. Gifts and memento were presented to several NSS awardees on the occasion.
