MU research scholars demand fellowship payment

IMPHAL, 23rd Sep: Non-NET research scholars of Manipur University on Monday carried out a sit-in protest inside the university campus at Canchipur here demanding payment of fellowship.
One of the protesters told media persons that the university issued a circular informing release of fellowship for three months without mentioning any other details. Subsequently, the registrar in-charge issued another circular stating that fellowship for non-NET research scholars will be paid from the date of final registration.
As per Manipur University PhD Ordinance 2017, payment of fellowship to research scholars is eligible from the date of provisional registration. At the same time, UGC guidelines also require payment of fellowship to non-NET research scholars, who had registered full-time under PhD registration norms, from the date of registration. However, the circular issued by the university contradicts the existing guidelines, the research scholar said and added that they cannot accept such diktats.
Several universities including Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Delhi University, NEHU, Assam University and JNU make payment of fellowship from the date of provisional registration, the protesters said while demanding the university authority to pay fellowship from the date of provisional registration. The protesters also said that they would launch intense agitation if the academic council meeting of the university to be held on Tuesday fails to adopt a resolution in this regard.
The protesters held placards demanding resignation of Academic Council chairman professor N Rajmohon among others demands.
