‘BJP scheming to erase NE indigenes via CAB’
IMPHAL, 22nd Sep: Referring to the recent announcement made by BJP-led NDA government at the centre that the disputed Citizenship Amendment Bill which will enable minority communities coming from neighbouring countries to get Indian citizenship would be implemented in the North East states soon, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Gaikhangam has contended that the central government’s move to enforce the Bill is intended to wipe out indigenous people of the region.
Responding to a query put up by media persons on the side-lines of a booth level interaction programme organised by Wangoi Block Congress Committee at the residence of MPCC vice-president S Achouba on Sunday, Gaikhangam observed that north east states particularly Manipur where there is miniscule population will be severely affected if the contentious Bill is implemented as indigenous people of the state would be dominated by outsiders which the BJP government wants.
He said that Congress party has been countering the proposed enforcement of CAB in the north east states with the assertion that indigenous people of the region would be surpassed by the population of outsiders if the Bill is introduced by the incumbent BJP government.
The seasoned politician conveyed that he as a CWC member requested the Congress party to fight against the central government’s bid to enforce the Bill in the north east states during the recent All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting and acting on his plea, the central decision-making assembly of the oldest national political party assured him that the proposed implementation of the Bill will be opposed by the party.
He claimed that BJP instead of upholding the Indian constitution is pondering over one religion, one language and one community theory which is against the constitution and the latest theory of ‘One Nation, One Language’ conceived by the party only envisaged to make Hindi language as the common language of the country which is unacceptable.
The BJP government has utterly failed to stand by the provisions enshrined in the Indian constitution which clearly say that a citizen can speak a language of his/her choice. The saffron party is anti-constitution and anti-national, he said.
Concerning the much-debated Framework Agreement signed between NSCN (IM) and Government of India which is likely to conclude soon, Gaikhangam who has served as the deputy chief minister of the state in the previous government pointed out that the central government is yet to disclose the details of the solution to be brought about, leaving people of the state suspicious of the outcome.
Maintaining that the Congress party still stands against any threat to the territorial and emotional integrity of the state, he said that the party is not against the agreement but the stakeholders concerned should be consulted before reaching at a final solution which should not compromise interests of the state. Earlier speaking at the programme, Gaikhangam maintained that there is no more hope bestowed on the BJP-led coalition government in the state, which has been struck by political crisis following the campaign launched by rebel MLAs to garner ministerial posts.
MPCC vice-presidents; office bearers and officials of frontal and cells of the party also attended the interaction programme during which Achouba spoke on the achievements brought by the previous government in Wangoi assembly constitution during its 15 years rule.
