Homage paid to Khongjom war heroes
THOUBAL, 14th Sep: Thousands of people from different parts of the state paid homage to the martyrs of Manipur, who sacrificed their lives for safeguarding Manipur’s sovereignty in the battle of Khongjom, during a religious event held at Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal district on Saturday.
Integrated Mega Tourism Development Cooperative Society Limited, Khebaching Khongjom hosted the tribute event which was attended by CAF&PD minister Karam Shyam and Wangjing-Tentha MLA P Brojen as chief guest and president respectively while Wangoi MLA O Lukhoi and DC Thoubal N Bandana were the guests of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Karam Shyam said that every Manipuri should feel proud in paying tributes to the brave sons of Manipur, who fought the mighty British Empire, and at the same time strive to follow in the footsteps of the forefathers. He also stressed the need for broadening one’s outlook and contributing towards strengthening the fraternal bond amongst the ethnic communities in order to bring peace and development in the society.
The minister further hailed MLA Paonam Brojen for his tireless endeavours in the development of the memorial complex into a mega tourist centre, which has started to attract large number of tourists from all over the world.
While thanking the public for their support in developing the memorial site, MLA Brojen urged all to follow in the path shown by the forefathers and strive to imbibe at least some of the characteristics and patriotism the brave sons had.
He further said that the Khongjom War Memorial complex had an area of only about 7 hectares in the past. However, with his efforts and support from all concerned, the area of the centre has been expanded to 62 hectares by annexing 55 hectares of land. There are two water bodies each with an area of around 20 hectares. Besides, the Integrated Mega Tourism Development Cooperative Society Limited has been undertaking development of several smaller water bodies and other spots inside the complex to attract more tourists, he said.
Brojen further said that farmers of Wangjing-Tentha AC had no access to water from the Thoubal dam canal. However, chief minister N Biren sanctioned additional fund to increase the canal length and construction work is underway. Once completed, irrigation supply from Thoubal Dam will reach Khongjom, Papal, Tekcham, Samaram and nearby areas through the canal and farmers will no longer face water scarcity issue, he added.
Highlighting his efforts in bringing improvement in education sector by hiring private teachers to fill up vacant posts, payment of old age pension to 1200 persons, distribution of regular PDS items, the MLA assured to continue working towards the welfare and development of the people and added that there is no meaning to get elected as public representative if he could not do anything for the people and the society.
