Cops sans helmet fined as traffic drive intensifies
IMPHAL, 13th Sep: With the much-talked Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 set to enforce in the state as well from September 25, traffic drives were carried out in different parts on Friday during which many people who violated guidelines under the Act were detained and made to pay fine.
A team of traffic police led by Inspector Dhiraj conducted a drive along Kanglapat road and detained people, who do not wear helmet and possess necessary vehicle documents including driving license. Two-wheelers in which three persons came together were also detained in the drive. All the traffic violators were made to pay fine.
Notably, uniformed police officers who came riding two-wheelers without helmet were also detained and fined for violating traffic rules. Mention may be made that Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, 2019 provides in detail the legislative provisions regarding licensing of drivers/conductors, registration of motor vehicles, control of motor vehicles through permits, special provisions relating to state transport undertakings, traffic regulation, insurance, liability, offences and penalties, etc.
A notification issued by the government had effected introduction of ‘no helmet, no petrol’ rule in all retail petrol outlets of the Indian Oil Corporation and the BPCL to encourage wearing of protective headgears. However, compliance to this effort had been very poor.
