Rs 6 crore earmarked for Rabi season: Hangkhanlian
IMPHAL, 13th Sep: To cope up for imminent Kharif crop deficit owing to drought situation in the state, a total amount of Rs 6 crore has been earmarked for this year’s Rabi season to procure seeds for alternative crops like wheat, mustard, gram, maize, etc. and provide the same to farmers.
This was stated by agriculture minister V Hangkhanlian while addressing the gathering at the launch function of an Agriculture Market Shed constructed under Rashtriya Krishi Bima Yojana 2018-19 at Chajing Mairenkhong on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest at the function, Hangkhanlian said that rain deficit has created problems to farmers in planting paddy throughout the state and it is very likely that paddy production would fall sharply this year. In view of the imminent crop failure, the present government under the leadership of chief minister N Biren consulted scientists and chalked out plans to make up the crop deficit. Accordingly, state government earmarked Rs 6 crore for procuring seeds for the upcoming Rabi season and distribute the same to farmers so as to mitigate their problem at least to some extent.
According to Hangkhanlian, state agriculture department has formulated a plan to realise PM Narendra Modi’s dream of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. If this policy is implemented properly, it would not be difficult to double agriculture and allied production by 2022 but government alone cannot achieve this target without the support of farmers, he said and appealed to farmers to work at their level best for achieving this target.
CAF & PD minister Karam Shyam, who also attended the function, spoke about harmful effects of chemical fertilizers and insecticides used in agriculture and allied sector and appealed to farmers to discard use of chemical fertilizers and insecticides in their fields.
The function was also attended by Lilong Municipal Council counsillor A Omibala as special guest.
