Manipur end 20-yr wait, clinch badminton c'ship title

CHRONICLE BUREAU IMPHAL, 9th Sep: Manipur ended a 20-year drought by winning the championship title of the North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships 2017 at Aizawl on Saturday.

Manipur pulled off an impressive 3-1 victory over hosts Mizoram in the senior team event final to seal the team championship crown. It was the state team’s first team title of the North East Zone Inter-State Badminton Championships since 1997.

Of the five events in the senior team competition on offer, Manipur pocketed three titles courtesy of M Meiraba Luwang (men’s singles), Maheshwari (women’s singles) and women’s doubles pair Maheshwari and N Purnima.

In the men’s singles final, Meiraba Luwang outplayed Mizoram’s Samuel Lalnunmawia in straight games (21-17, 21-18).

Maheshwari, meanwhile, won the women’s singles event with a dominating 21-12, 21-12 success against Mizoram’s Lalrinzuali.

Maheshwari also helped her team clinch the women’s doubles title with partner Purnima. The duo outdid Mizoram’s F Vanlalhriatpuii and Lalrinzuali 21-16, 21-15 for their trophy.

However, K Dingku and Kh Manjit lost 19-21, 17-21 to Mizoram’s Lalmuanawma and Lalduhwama in the men’s doubles event final.

It was heartbreak for the junior team who faltered in the final hurdle of the junior boys U19 mixed team event after losing out to Assam who defeated the state boys by a 3-2 margin.
