Gov urged to save Manipuri celluloid film negatives
IMPHAL, 6th July: Manipur Film Producers’ Association has urged the government save undeveloped negatives of Manipuri celluloid films which are lying at West Bengal Film Development Corporation. Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday, Manipur Film Producers’ Association spokesman L Surjakanta stated that Manipuri celluloid films which began production from 1972 were developed at labs and studios outside the state. There are more than 50 Manipuri Films, both feature and non-feature which were all developed at West Bengal Film Development Corporation. However, with the advent of digital era, West Bengal government closed down the corporation and Manipuri celluloid films lying in the corporation are also on the verge of getting destroyed. Surjakanta informed that he recently went on a trip to West Bengal and discovered that the negatives which should be kept in an air conditioned room, 24X7, were found stacked up in a room with poor ventilation. These negatives are a treasure for the people of Manipur and so to the CM and the Art and Culture Minister should take up necessary measures for saving these valuable properties of the state from extinction, Surjakanta said.
