STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 10th Aug: The education department has been forced to revoke its order with regard to intake of 120 additional seats in DM College of Arts on Thursday after students of the college resorted to violent protests.
The students burned effigies of education minister, education commissioner and education director, and furniture of the college. A police team led by additional SP Priyadarshini rushed to the protest site, doused the fire and salvaged some furniture.
The angry students also attempted to snatch those furniture and burn them again. However, additional police force came and stopped the students from causing further damage to college properties.
After the situation settled down, some officials of education department came to meet the college principal and gave the latter an order cancelling
the previous order of allowing intake of 120 additional seats in the college. After the principal delivered the information to the students, they withdrew their stir.
The protesting students told media persons that 1000 students were selected for admission for the first semester based on merit list following an entrance test.
Normal classes began from July 4 and students have been demanding the authority to address hardships faced by the students due to shortage of desks and benches, which force many students to attend their classes while standing.
