IMPHAL, 13th Mar: Seven I-League clubs including NEROCA FC on Wednesday decided to withdraw from the upcoming Hero Super Cup 2019 after their plea was not heard by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Chennai City FC, Quess East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, NEROCA FC, Aizawl FC, Gokulam Kerala FC and Minerva Punjab FC, in a collective press release, say that have resolved to withdraw their respective teams from the upcoming Hero Super Cup 2019, citing reasons for their decision.
The reasons being given by the seven I-League clubs are ‘Our letter dated February 18 requesting the general secretary of AIFF to address the various issues of the I-League has not been responded to’, ‘no clarity of the I-league and its future’, increasing inability to find sponsors in the absence of clarity of the I-League and its future’, and ‘lack of an agenda for the game at grass root level’.
Earlier, the clubs had written to AIFF President Praful Patel requesting a meeting to "seek answers" regarding the league's future.
The Super Cup is India's main knockout tournament hosted by the AIFF which pits I-League and Indian Super League (ISL) clubs against each other.
The qualification round of the Super Cup is set to be held on March 15 and 16 in Bhubaneswar. The main round is scheduled to start on March 29.
