Ram Madhav confirms Sitaram’s CAB fear
IMPHAL, 5th Feb: Stating that BJP will definitely table the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in the Rajya Sabha, CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury has told the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) team that a coordinated effort is needed to defeat the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
A Guwahati-based news agency quoted BJP general secretary in-charge of North East Ram Madhav as saying on Tuesday that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 (CAB) will be placed in the Rajya Sabha for approval in the ongoing session as supplementary bill as talks are on with aggrieved parties to find a middle ground which will satisfy all.
'“Home Ministry is talking to all the stakeholders and we are hopeful that a middle ground will be found soon which will pave the way for passing of the bill in upper house,” Madhav said.
Though the bill was not listed in the business list of the Rajya Sabha, it could be introduced in the upper house as supplementary bill anytime during the session, he added.
On the other-hand, the CLP team led by its leader former chief minister O Ibobi met the CPI leader and apprised him about the growing public uprising against the Bill in Manipur and other parts of northeast.
The Congress delegates also urged the senior politician for CPI-M’s role in defeating the Bill in the Rajya Sabha when it is introduced for passing. In response, Yechury told the Congress team that CPI-M has been standing against the Bill and had carried out a nationwide protest on Monday. Stating that the Bill is based on ethnic line and religions which is unconstitutional, he said that the left parties will always stand against such violation of Constitution. It needs a collective effort of the opposition parties to prevent Rajya Sabha from clearing the Bill. CPI-M has been talking with likeminded parties to take a firm stand against the Bill, he said while asking the CLP team to meet leaders of other parties and garner their support against the Bill as well.
Even though the Bill has not been included in the business list of Rajya Sabha, there are high possibilities of BJP tabling the Bill and making efforts to pass it in Rajya Sabha. As such, the opposition parties need to stay alert and prevent it, the CPI-M leader stressed.
Meanwhile, the CLP team would be meeting leaders of other political parties to win their support in defeating the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
MPCC president (outgoing) TN Haokip, MLAs Govindas Konthoujam, Ak Mirabai, K Ranjit, Th Lokeshwar, DD Thaisii, Md Fajur Rahim, K Meghachandra and Kh Joykisan were the members of team who met the CPI-M leader.
