CAB will uproot NE indigenes: Meinya
IMPHAL, 18th Jan: Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya expressed deep concern that the entire indigenous people inhabiting in the North East region including Manipur will be uprooted if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (CAB) is forcibly enacted.
Sharing his view on the Bill issue during inauguration of office and warehouse of Konthoujam Leikai Development Association Friday, the Congress MP alleged that the BJP led government forcibly passed the CAB in the Lok Sabha on January 8 unmindful of the fact that the Bill is against the wishes of NE people.
Amid sharp reactions and protests across the region, the Union government tabled the same Bill in the Rajya Sabha on January 9, he said. Opposition members raised strong objection against the Bill when it was introduced in the Lok Sabha but the ruling party forcibly passed it taking advantage of its numerical superiority. After the passage by Lok Sabha, the Bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha but it was referred to a Select Committee after Opposition member voiced dissent, he said, adding that the fate of CAB is now in the hand of the Select Committee and the Central government is most likely to forcibly pass it in the next parliament session.
The MP representing Inner Manipur further said that it would be very unfortunate for entire indigenous people of NE if the CAB gets implemented as the indigenous people of the region will be pushed to the brink of extinction. The entire NE region will witness intense agitation once the Rajya Sabha passes the CAB, the MP anticipated.
Terming chief minister N Biren’s statement that CAB won’t be implemented in Manipur and it would not affect the state as ‘worthless’, Dr Meinya said it is ridiculous to say that a law enacted for the country cannot be implemented in a state of the nation.
The function was also attended by former Konthoujam MLA Sarat as president while Yurembam GP members Th Nilamani and S Nabakumar, Konthoujam GP Pradhan H Manisana and other Pradhan and members of the GP were the presidium members.
A toilet complex constructed with monetary contribution of the GP Pradhan was also inaugurated at the function.
