DESAM volunteers rally against ‘venomous’ bill, burn copies

IMPHAL, 9th Jan: While terming the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (CAB) as a ‘venomous’ bill, volunteers of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) staged a rally in Imphal Wednesday and burnt copies of the Bill passed by the Lok Sabha.
Before taking out the rally and burning copies of CAB, DESAM volunteers also staged a sit-in-protest at Sagolband Moirang Leirak and demanded a clear stand of Manipur government on the issue. During the protest, DESAM volunteers held placards describing CAB as a ‘dark’ gift of the Union government to people of NE region and demanding that the Rajya Sabha should not endorse the CAB.
After the sit-in-protest, the DESAM volunteers took out a rally towards Imphal city. They even overcame police barricade and rallied up to Keishampat Wahengbam Leikai where police forced them to make U-turn and return to their office at Sagolband Moirang Leirak.
In further protest against the CAB, large number of DESAM volunteers converged at Keishampat Junction and burnt copies of the bill.
DESAM vice-president Nameirakpam Edison told media persons after the protest that illegal immigrants are flooding the NE region and there is still no system to check these immigrants. Amidst this situation, CAB has been passed by the Lok Sabha to increase woes of the NE people, he said and maintained that the CAB cannot be applicable in NE and indigenous people of the region must fight together.
He also declared that DESAM is ready to launch a movement against the Bill.
On other hand, students of Manipur University staged another protest against CAB in front of the varsity’s main gate Wednesday and burnt copies of the Bill.
Meanwhile, North East India Democratic Party (NEIDP) in coordination with Ideal Club, Tera staged a sit-in-protest against passage of CAB at Tera Keithel Wednesday.
Addressing gathering at the protest venue, NEIDP central working committee vice-president Elangbam Brojendro said that the party condemned passing of the CAB despite strong opposition by the people and observed the CAB will give severe impact to indigenous people of the NE region.
