IMPHAL, 4th Jan: Deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar said that sports have enormous role to play in character building.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function of 8th Sports Meet cum Dimki Session 2019 at Makuilongdi village in Senapati district on Saturday, the Dy CM maintained that sports and academics can go hand-in-hand.
While conveying to the gathering to ignore the notion that sports have no contribution in character building, he recalled his own experiences during his school and college days and said that playing and sweating every day in the evening for about 1 hour helped him improve concentration in studies.
Praising the beauty of the village, he regretted for not visiting the village during his posting as SP of Senapati district during 1982-84.
Referring to the request or grievances mentioned in the memorandum submitted to him at the venue by Zeme Naga Council and Makuilungdi Village Authority, Joykumar assured all possible assistance for construction of a 45-km all-weather road from Makuilongdi to Bendramai. He also assured maximum support for setting up of office-cum-guesthouse at Senapati DHQ in consultation with the DC. He then offered financial assistance towards the construction of traditional Zeliangrong ‘Morung’ in the village to promote and preserve traditional values of Zeliangrong people.
TA& Hills minister N Kayisii, who attended the function as guest of honour, lauded the unity prevailing in Makuilongdi and surrounding villages while urging all to preserve the unity at all cost. Maintaining that sports can contribute for all round development of a person, Kayisii appealed to all to promote sports and games in the right approach.
He however expressed concern over the declining interest in sports among the tribal communities and urged all to make the best use of the football ground which he had constructed for Makuilongdi and surrounding villages.
He also urged the younger generations to take education seriously as it will help in bringing development in the society. DC, SP and ADC member of Senapati, students and Church leaders also attended the inaugural function of the sports meet, which is organised by Zeme Sports Association under the theme ‘Together We Build’.
