Ministry to be apprised on wheat farming potential
IMPHAL, 30th Dec: Post successful trial of wheat farming in some districts, the state agriculture department would soon submit a detailed project report for large scale wheat farming to the ministry of agriculture, said agriculture director Ph Rajendra Sunday.
The director was on an inspection visit to Koirou Pat area where a farmers’ interest group called Vegetable Farmers Club carried out Rabi crop farming with inputs from the agriculture department under the Rabi Campaign kicked started by the chief minister.
Interacting with media persons during the visit, Rajendra said that peas are being cultivated in the area successfully and the department will provide sprinkler sets on Monday for watering the pea plants from the nearby water source. The initiative was taken up to make the agricultural fields in the state, which remained unutilised for more than six months, whole year green by planting different varieties of crops. Different committees of the line departments are overseeing the project and the chief minister is conducting weekly review to ensure proper implementation, he said.
In order to encourage interested farmers, the government is also taking up policy to provide 95 to 100 per cent subsidy in buying machineries and equipment. He then urged interested farmers to come to the department office or meet field functionaries to carry out cluster farming. Regarding the trial farming of wheat plants, the director said that the programme was carried out at Liwa Chaning in Chandel and several areas in Thoubal district. Further wheat farming will be taken up at Chalou, Sabungkhok and Seijang areas in Imphal East in association with Kishan Sangh, he added.
Considering the importance of agriculture in a society, the CM had already instructed principal secretary (finance) not to delay in releasing funds for agriculture related programmes and as such there are high chances that the additional fund of Rs 6 crore for agriculture department as included in the revised estimate would be released soon, Rajendra maintained.
