Congress leaders tongue lashes N Biren government
IMPHAL, 29th Dec: Congress MLA and MPCC treasurer K Ranjit Saturday said that victory of Congress in the inner parliamentary seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha election is inevitable considering the state of governance by the BJP government in the state.
Speaking at the 162nd birth anniversary of Bir Tikendrajit held at the residence of former minister O Joy under the aegis of Langthabal Block Congress Committee on Saturday, Ranjit accused the N Biren-government of carrying out anti people activities including the oppressive act in Manipur University. Due to its failure to frame a common minimum programme, several BJP leaders are joining Congress lately. Many former MLAs and ministers of BJP would also be joining Congress in January next year, he claimed.
Opposition plays an important role in democracy and it is duty of the opposition to criticise improper policies of the government. However, the BJP government sees such criticism from opposition as politicising issues and often derides voices of dissent. It was due to sheer luck after party hopping and finding himself in cosy position of being one of the senior leaders in the BJP that made Biren the CM, Ranjit said while clarifying that nobody in the Congress party envy his position.
During his stint in the Congress, Biren himself had talked of erecting a golden statue of the then chief minister O Ibobi when the latter fiercely opposed bid of NSCN-IM leader Muivah to enter the state, the Sugnu MLA noted. But today, he (Biren) has changed his colour and had the audacity to contend that he does not recognise MLAs. Since the state has a few number of MLAs unlike major states with 200 to 300 MLAs, his refusal to acknowledge MLA Joykisan could be construed as a clear case of N Biren mentally unsound to remain as the CM of Manipur, he opined. Calling upon the people of the state to remember the courage of leaders like Bir Tikendrajit and follow in their footsteps and ideals, former chief minister O Ibobi said that the time has come to end the dictatorial rule in the state and bring about a truly democratic government.
In his address, former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam said that Okram Joy joined Congress to save the state from the dictatorial government, which has rendered democracy meaningless. Congress party never reacted against criticism of the leader, who had remained in the opposition for long, as he always spoke the truth with the sense of basic fundamental truth. Instead, the party always strived to rectify its mistakes from such criticism, he added.
Ex-minister O Joy said that BJP will not return to power in the state. It is time to throw out not only the lotus flower but also its roots from the state. The BJP government in the state has lost its sense regarding the role of opposition in a democratic government. It only sees as enemies behind every voice of dissent and is hell bent on arresting such persons. In the history of Manipur, the present government is the worst, most corrupt and incompetent government, he maintained.MPCC president TN Haokip, ex-MLAs RK Anand, Dr Ng Bijoy, Dr I Ibohalbi and other party leaders also attended the function.
