One shot dead in road rage, accused arrested

IMPHAL, 26th Dec: A heated exchange between two drivers at Naoremthong new bridge under Lamphel Police Station late Tuesday evening led to a man being shot dead and another arrested on murder charge.
Protesting the road rage murder, people from the locality of the deceased briefly blockaded Tiddim Road on Wednesday.
The deceased man has been identified as Salam Prasanta (25), son of Tomba of Changangei Uchekon, while the arrested shooter has been identified as Chabungbam Budhachandra (55), son of Babhudhon of Sagolband Loukrakpam Leikai. Budhachandra is presently the deputy manager of SBI Leimakhong Branch.
According to police reports, Budhachandra was driving his i20 bearing registration no MN 01 G 6843, from Uripok to Tera around 10.30 pm Tuesday and was crossing Naoremthong new bridge. At the same moment, Prasanta was also crossing the bridge from the opposite direction (Tera to Uripok) in his Swift car (white) bearing registration no MN06 LA 6624. Two of his friends were also in the car as passengers while four more friends were following close behind in a Cruze car (black). As both the drivers of i20 and Swift car reached the foot of the bridge, they got into a heated exchange of words over lane diversion. After a brief disagreement, the driver of the i20 drove up a little ahead and halted and the swift car did the same near the foot of the bridge. Budhachandra then alighted from the I20, came up to the swift car and started arguing with Prasanta.
After Prasanta got back inside his vehicle, Budhachandra reportedly took out his licensed gun and shot Pransanta on the left side of his chest before running away.
The reports further say that Prasanta’s friends immediately rushed him to RIMS hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries. A complaint was filed at Lamphel Police Station and the police arrested Chabungbam Budhachandra based on the vehicle registration number given by Prasanta’s friends. Lamphel Police have also recovered his (Budhachandra) .32 license gun and have seized both the swift car and i20.
Budhachandra was produced before the court of CJM Imphal West on Wednesday and has been remanded to police custody till December 31.
Meanwhile, Prasanta’s body has been transferred to RIMS Morgue for post mortem examination. Prasanta is survived by his wife and a two-year old son. On the other hand, decrying the road rage murder, locals of Changangei Ucheckon on Wednesday morning shut down Tiddim Road near Changangei Uchekon area, along with the formation of a People’s Action Committee (PAC) in connection with the incident. Due to the sudden shutdown, commuters along Tiddim road experienced serious inconveniences.
A police team led by Imphal West District SP rushed to the area to prevent any unwanted incidents. Patsoi A/Ci MLA AK Mirabai and Naoriya Pakhanglakpa A/C MLA S Subaschandra also came to the site and talked to the protesters, following which the shutdown was withdrawn.
After the two MLAs left the area, womenfolk of the Leikai boarded autos and attempted to storm Budhachandra’s residence at Tera Loukrakpam Leikai but were prevented from doing so by the police. However, they managed to overpower the police and were able to reach Ghari Makha Leikai via one of the roads in Uchekon, before being intercepted by huge number of police personnel and forced to go back.
