AMSU demands Govt to release Kishorchandra
IMPHAL, 24th Dec: While likening the arrest and subsequent detention of ISTV news anchor Kishorchandra Wangkhem under NSA as suppression of Freedom of Expression of a citizen, All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has asked the state government to withdraw the NSA case filed against the scribe and release him unconditionally at the earliest.
Issuing a statement in this regard, AMSU publicity secretary Roshan Golmei stated that the re-arrest of Kishorchandra under NSA for one year even after the CJM had ruled that the statement made by Kishorchandra was not seditious in nature is highly condemnable.
The act of jailing Kishorchandra for one year is suppression of freedom of expression, AMSU said, while accusing the government of committing a great mistake by violating rights to freedom of speech and expression.
The union also strongly condemned Kishorchandra for using derogatory words while expressing his opposition to the statement made by Chief Minister N Biren during the Jhansi Rani Laxmibai’s birth anniversary celebration. The statement made by CM Biren could distort the history of Manipur, noted AMSU and stated that it would never accept the arrest and judicial custody of Kishorchandra under NSA for speaking against the state and Union governments led by BJP under false charges. Accusing that the BJP led government only wanted to be lauded/hailed by the people and tried to suppress everyone who speak against them, AMSU alleged that the government is threatening the people so that they do not to go against them and in order to supress the people while violating their freedom of expression.
As such, Indian Journalist Union (IJU), other journalists’ associations of the nation and even BBC reacted against the government while demanding unconditional release of Kishorchandra.
Therefore, AMSU stands against the arrest of Kishorchandra and in order to protect the freedom of expression of citizens and to prevent occurrence of any untoward incidents relating to arrest of Kishorchandra, the state government should withdraw all the charges against him and release him without any condition.
Otherwise, AMSU would take it as an invitation of the government to create chaos in the state.
The union observed that arrested journalist made the people aware of the possible threat towards Manipuri culture due to impact of rise in Hinduvta culture in the nation and it is highly appreciable if viewed from the social-cultural context of the state. As such, AMSU urged the people to join hands in fighting for justice to Kishorchandra and to protect freedom of expression of every citizen, added the statement.
