New Delhi/Imphal, 19th Dec: North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), an umbrella body for indigenous student organisations of the North Eastern region, staged a protest demonstration against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.
“We are warning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP-led NDA government at the Centre against the influx of illegal migrants in the Northeastern states,” said AASU chief adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya.
The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill proposes to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
“We want the Joint Parliamentary Committee to hear all the voices from the North Eastern states on the Citizenship Bill,” said Samuel Jawra, chairman, NESO.
NESO comprises Khasi Students’ Union, All Assam Students’ Union, Naga Students’ Federation, Mizo Zirlai Pawi, Twipra Students’ Federation, All Manipur Students’ Union, Garo Students’ Union and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union. The NESO also announced new agitation programmes to demand withdrawal of the Bill.
The protest was also joined by Manipuri Students’ Association of Delhi (MSAD) leaders.
On the sidelines of the protest, AMSU president Manjit Sarangthem said that component bodies of NESO strongly oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which is due to be passed during the winter session of Lok Sabha.
In this regard, NESO executive members and component members on May 10, 2018 cautioned the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) chairman Rajendra Agarwal that the apex students’ body will launch massive protest in the region and the capital of the nation if the government tries to pass and implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016. Moreover, all the Chief Ministers of the region have been urged to oppose the Bill by submitting memorandum.
Manjit continued that NE region is not a dumping site for illegal immigrants. It is communal to give priority to only some sections based on religion. Instead of Citizenship Amendment Bill, the Union government should implement ILP system in the entire NE region, he demanded.
