Poppy plants worth ` 6 cr destroyed at Machi

IMPHAL, 13th Dec: Tengnoupal police and officials of district administration on Thursday destroyed poppy plants worth around Rs 6 crore which were found grown in Machi hill range in Tengnoupal district.
The illegal poppy plants found cultivated across 30 acres of land were destroyed by the officials during a drive which began from 9.30 am and continued till 3.15 pm.
The drive was joined by Tengnoupal SP Dr S Ibomcha, DSP N Suraj, OC of Tengnoupal police station Inspector John Lamkang, OC of Machi police station DK Angrung Maring, Inspector of Moreh Commando N Jatishwor, Addl SP of NAB RK Shaklemba and official of Tengnoupal DC office SDC Th Sunderaj. Speaking to media on the sidelines, SP Dr Ibomcha reminded all concerned that it is illegal to plant poppy and appealed to the people to refrain from growing such illegal plants.
Pointing out that planting poppy is punishable under law, the SP affirmed that they will continue the drive.
