UTLA cadre hurt in encounter, three arrested
IMPHAL, 5th Dec: One cadre of United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA) has been injured and others arrested with two weapons after a gunfight with police commandos at Sekmai Nongthonband under Sekmai police station in Imphal West district at about 4.30pm Wednesday.
The injured cadre has been identified as Phougoulen Singson (26) son of late Thangtinlen of Phaileng village, Kangpokpi. He sustained bullet injury on his left thigh.
Three accomplices of Phougoulen arrested by the police commandos after the encounter are identified as Joseph Singson of Phailen village, Angom Phulo of Sekmai Nongthonband and Kamlalpawl of Sunhluchhip village near Aizawl, Mizoram. Kamlalpawl is said to be a Territorial Army jawan currently attached to 17 Assam Rifles.
Two 9mm pistols with some live rounds have been recovered from them.
A police source informed that Imphal West police commandos rushed to Sekmai Nongthonband area upon getting specific information about the presence of some underground cadres. When the commando team reached the approach road to hot-mix plant from the road leading to Sekmai Gas Bottling Plant, some armed men opened fire towards the team. Immediatley, the commando team retaliated in which Phougoulen was injured while two of his accomplices were arrested. Injured Phougoulen was then rushed to RIMS hospital for treatment.
The source quoting Phougoulen as revealing during initial questioning said that he is a cadre of UTLA and the quartet were at the area to exchange arms.
Soon after getting the news, a team of Sekmai police led by OC rushed to the encounter site and later registered a case.
