Tourism means preservation of nature, says Shyamkumar

UKHRUL/KAMJONG, 3rd Dec: "Tourism means preservation of nature and it will fulfil its meaning only when natural resources are preserved," said forest & environment minister Th Shyamkumar while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the second edition of Kamjong Festival 2018 held under the theme "Promoting Tourism".
The minister opened the two-day festival with Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing as functional president amid musical performances at the local public ground on Monday evening.
Stating that Manipur is a well-known state where unique and scenic locations are found, Shyamkumar called for proper preservation of the state's rich biodiversity.
"Under the leadership of CM N Biren, the state government has started an initiative to provide financial assistance to villages which preserve forests, with the first being Khamasom in Ukhrul district," he informed and urged the villagers to take up preservation of forests in their respective villages.
He also assured to build a guesthouse at Kamjong next year, while responding to a request from the local headman Mataimi Chithung.
While lauding the festival, which is being organised as a plastic free event, he also extended financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to the organisers.
In his speech, MLA Leishiyo opined that celebration of different major festivals in the state are about preservation of nature.
Recalling that in olden days, people were judicious with the use of natural resources, he attributed the degrading environment in the present context to greed of people and urged the village chiefs and public leaders to come up with a local intervention to save the depleting forest covers and its resources.
Arun Enterprises proprietor Thangjam Arunkumar said that tourism has vast potential in the state for providing opportunities and for interaction of diverse communities. He also said that enforcing ban on use of plastic needs alternative and innovative means for its success.
Mataimi Chithung headman Kamjong disclosed that despite declaring Kamjong as a district, the government is yet to pay any attention for its development.
