Security officer arrested, BSF beefs up security

IMPHAL, 18th Nov: Imphal West district police have arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Assembly security services in connection with the grenade attack at the Manipur Legislative Assembly complex on November 16 evening.
The arrested ASI has been identified as Yumnam Deven (56) son of Birchandra of Nambol Maibam Chingmang under Bishnupur district.
Addressing a press conference in his office premises here on Sunday, Imphal West district superintendent of police (SP) Jogeshchandra Haobijam informed that the police team arrested Deven on Saturday evening at about 7 after they got reliable information of his involvement in the blast.
During interrogation, Deven confessed about his involvement in the blast and disclosed to the police that he maintained regular communication with UNLF cadres and informed them about security movements prior to the attack. He also confessed that one SS major Panthoibi of UNLF gave him Rs 1,31,000.
Police recovered the amount from his home and handed him along with the recovered cash to Lamphel police station, the SP said while adding that further investigation is going on to trace and arrest all those involved in the attack.
In the aftermath of the grenade attack at the Sentry post of Manipur Legislative Assembly Complex, the Border Security Force (BSF) has tightened security in and around the complex.
The grenade explosion caused injuries to three security personnel, including a BSF jawan.
BSF Inspector General (Mizoram-Cachar Frontier) Dr K C Mahali arrived here on Saturday to take stock of the situation.
According to a release issued by PRO of M & C Frontier of BSF, Dr Mahali visited the Assembly complex and carried out thorough inspection in and around the complex to study and work out if any amendment or rectification is required regarding security measures.
The release stated that the IG instructed BSF officers to enhance security of the Assembly complex, maintain strict vigil round the clock and to carry out anti-sabotage checking.
The IG also recommended use of latest electronic gadgets and increasing manpower to foil any attempt of anti-national elements, the release said.
After spot verification and taking security audit of State Assembly complex, KC Mahali went to High Court of Manipur complex during which he briefed the BSF officers and troops to remain alert which was followed by the IG calling on the Director General of Police, Manipur and discussing about the recent attack and other issues connected with security, the release informed.
From The statement added that his visit in the state at this point of time is a morale boosting factor for BSF troops and will be greatly beneficial in bringing about a positive change about security measures.
