Shyamkumar calls for saving beauty of Loktak Lake
IMPHAL, 24th Oct: The 23rd Loktak Day 2018 organised under the theme 'Save Loktak, Our Life' by Loktak Day Celebration Committee, Komlakhong was held at Komlakhong Chingthee, Mayang Imphal in Imphal West district on Wednesday. The day was first celebrated in 1995.
Speaking as chief guest at the function, forest and environment minister Th Shyamkumar called for full support from the people living in the periphery of Loktak Lake in saving the largest fresh water lake of Northeast and its wildlife including Sangai. Raising concern over the encroachment near the Lake, he appealed to the people to stop unauthorised activities near the Lake so as to save the beauty of the lake.
The minister opined that scientists and other experts should be consulted before taking up any developmental work near the Lake and other vulnerable places so that wildlife are not affected. The government is fully committed for the welfare of the people as well as to save the environment and wildlife, he said.
The state is blessed with natural beauty and it is the duty and responsibility of its citizens to preserve it for future generation. The forest and environment department is committed to save the environment including Sangai at Keibul Lamjao National Park, wildlife and migratory birds.
Loktak Development Authority (LDA) project director Laishram Bhagaton also raised concern over the encroachment near the Lake. He said that the state government has various programmes including plans to give livelihood to the farmers of the area. Stating that LDA needs cooperation of the people, he called upon the people to help in saving Loktak.
Celebration committee convener A Tiken said that the main objective of the day is to spread awareness to save the lake. Disappearance of many lakes and moats in the state prompted the committee to celebrate the day with the hope the conserve the natural water bodies of the state, he added.
Deputy speaker Kongkham Robindro, Sekmai MLA Heikham Dingo, Manipur Buildings and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board chairman Thokchom Satyabrata, Keirao MLA Lourembam Rameshwor, officials of LDA and people of the area attended the function.
