UCM invites political parties to join mass rally
IMPHAL, 17th Oct: In order to make the proposed October 31 mass rally for protection of territorial integrity of Manipur more inclusive and successful, United Committee Manipur (UCM) has resolved to allow participation of various political parties in the state and invited them to a meeting to be held on October 18 at Manipur Press Club. Addressing a press conference held at its Lamphel office on Wednesday, UCM president Sunil Karam pointed out that it’s been 21 years since the talk between Government of India and NSCN-IM started and it is much likely that an agreement will be reached soon. But there is strong apprehension that the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015 will in some way affect Manipur’s unity, integrity and even may bypass the authority of the state government.
Even during an earlier meeting, the current peace talk interlocutor RN Ravi had indicated that NSCN-IM may be given extra authority in some way. He had also given false statements on the possible impact of the peace talk to the Parliamentary Standing Committee, the UCM president alleged.
Sunil claimed that although the Government of India has given assurance that there will be no effect on the state’s integrity and interest due to the peace talk, public apprehension still remains. Thus, to demonstrate that the people of the state will never allow any change in Manipur’s territorial integrity or allow any administrative autonomy by bypassing the state government, the mass rally is to be organised, he added.
Sunil further informed that the mass rally will start from Tiddim Ground, Kwakeithel and will culminate at Khuman Lampak where a public meeting will be held to adopt a resolution to make it clear once and for all to the state and the Central governments that the state’s integrity will never be compromised under any circumstances. “So, we appeal to all the political parties of Manipur, people of every profession and section to come and participate in the mass rally”, he pleaded.
Meanwhile, Jiribam units of Kangleipak Students’ Association, International Peace and Social Advancement and Jiribam Women's Association Kangleipak have announced their full support to the mass rally.
