Cong rides HC decree to slam Govt, demands unconditional release
IMPHAL, 12th Oct: While hailing the intervention of High Court of Manipur in the Manipur University row, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded the government to release all those arrested students and teachers without any condition to resolve the crisis fully.
Addressing a press conference at MPCC office here on Friday, party spokesperson MLA K Ranjit blamed the government for failing to resolve the issue. Failure of the government to address the issue is having serious impact on the career of thousands of students and it shows the government’s outlook towards its people, he said.
On the other hand, it is shameful for the BJP government to allege other political parties, which sought early solutions to the issue, of politicising the issue while hiding its incompetent administration. Congress got involved in the issue by forming a fact finding committee from May 30 after 19 days of the MU crisis as the government turned a blind eye to the situation.
After collecting information, the party met President of India and Union home minister for intervention and bring normalcy in the university. It was only after the Congress delegation apprised the Centre that the state government took up some initiatives, he said.
On the other hand, remaining as silent spectator by the Centre and state government over the series of unwarranted activities of VC Prof Pandey aggravated the situation. Moreover, BJP tried to mislead the public and the entire nation on the issue and MU community by facilitating a public rally despite restrictions imposed on public gathering, he alleged.
Ranjit further said that the government now should take necessary initiatives to resolve the crisis. Since professor Yugindro had admitted to the Governor that he filed the FIR with false claims, the government should withdraw the FIR and release all the arrested students and teachers immediately to facilitate restoration of complete normalcy in the university.
Former MU VC and ex-MLA Dr Ng Bijoy opined that the state legislature could have easily resolved the issue and termed the intervention by the court as a defeat of the legislature.
Political parties are a union of people willing to serve the public under a united body following a common ideology. As such, it is obvious for any political party to participate in public issues when the government failed to address it timely. It is unfortunate for BJP to see such participation as politicising the issue, he said, while asking the reason for existence of BJP.
Charging the Centre and state government of prolonging and worsening the matter, he said that HRD ministry played a major role in prolonging the issue by acting on the whims of AP Pandey. Since professor Yugindro had admitted that he used false charges in filing the FIR, there is no reason for detaining the arrested students and teachers, he said while demanding immediate and unconditional release to resolve the crisis.
MPCC president TN Haokips, MLAs and ex-MLAs of Congress party were also present during the press conference.
