Students seeking withdrawal of FIR tear-gased,one hurt

IMPHAL,6th Oct: A student sustained injuries when police personnel fired tear gas shells towards a large number of students, who had come to the Wangkhei Thangapat Mapal residence of Manipur University VC in-charge Professor K Yugindro on Saturday to request him for withdrawal of the FIR filed against the arrested students and teachers.

Under the supervision of AMSU, MSF, KSA, DESAM, SUK and AIMS, a large number of students from various schools and colleges came to meet the VC in-charge at his Wangkhei Thangapat Mapal residence around 4 pm. The students came in diesel autos and alighted near the entrance of Wangkhei Thangapat. However, large of police personnel including Imphal East District women police stopped the students at the entrance of Wangkhei Thangapat.

The police personnel had already been deployed in the area since Saturday morning, following receipt of information that students may try to storm the residence of the VC in-charge. A brief scuffle broke out between the security personnel and the students. The students were not allowed to enter despite repeated requests that they only want to meet Prof K Yugindro so as to request him to withdraw the FIR. Subsequently, the police fired tear gas shells upon the students to disperse them. The students also retaliated by pelting stones at the police

Nonetheless, the police continued to fire tear gas shells to disperse the students till Andro Parking area. One student sustained injuries during the bombardment of tear gas shells and was taken to Advance Hospital for treatment. Speaking on the sidelines, a student named Somorjit Luwang expressed that the present situation at Manipur is a matter of huge embarrassment in the global context. The students from various institutions had come to meet Prof K Yugindro only to request him to withdraw his FIR, based on which many students and teachers were arrested, he added.

On the other hand, in connection with the demands of the six student bodies for immediate release of the arrested students and teachers, withdrawal of security forces from the University campus, expediting enquiry against suspended vice-chancellor AP Pandey and withdrawal of the disciplinary action against MUTA and MUSU; students of RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya, SV Gatewell, Royal Academy of Manipur, Shining Academy, Chingkhu High School, Tamphal Quality Academy and Khundrakpam Public School protested by forming human chains in front of their respective schools on Saturday.

A member of the six student bodies, Dhanachandra Khaidem reiterated the demands of the student bodies and cautioned of launching intense agitations in case of failing to do the needful for restoring normal academic atmosphere. In continuation of the joint protest launched by AMSU, MSF, KSA, DESAM, SUK and AIMS, Naorem Leikai Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, on Saturday, staged a sit-in protest demanding resolution of MU issue as soon as possible at Kakwa Naorem Leikai.
