CM Biren launches football balloon for FIFA U-17 World Cup
NEW DELHI, 19th May: Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Friday launched football balloon for FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2017 at Connaught Palace, New Delhi as chief guest.
The function was organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports to mark India hosting the U-17 World Cup, which will be held from October 6 to 28 this year. The function was attended by union minister of state (ic) for sports Vijay Goel, cricketer Md Kaif and boxer Vijender Singh among others.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for recognising the football talent of Manipur by inviting him to the event. He also expressed hope that sometime in the near future Manipur could also be one of the venues for FIFA events. Biren emphasised the need to tap the immense talent possessed by India. “Football is an extremely useful sport for physical fitness. In the modern times of fast food, unhealthy lifestyle and huge pressure on academic performance, we need to emphasis on physical fitness for children in the country. Football is a great and cheap way to promote physical fitness,” he said.
Further, he informed that recently it was decided to start a Chief Minister’s Football Cup in Manipur in the name of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya from this year onwards. He also urged his cabinet colleagues, MLAs & MPs of Manipur to encourage football in their respective constituencies. Union minister of state (ic) for sports Vijay Goel thanked the Chief Minister for gracing the occasion. The upcoming FIFA event could not be organised in Imphal since Manipur did not approach earlier to host this event, he explained, while adding that he would definitely see that such events are also organised in Imphal in the future.
