9 state boxers reach women’s nat'l boxing QFs

IMPHAL,4th Sep: Manipur put on an impressive show on Tuesday at the 1st Sub Junior Women’s National Boxing Championship, with nine out of 12 state boxers making it to the quarterfinals. Yumnam Venika Chanu, Thiyam Apsara Devi, Bidya Maisnam, Huidrom Graviya Devi, Wangjam Ethoibi Chanu, Elangbam Thoithoi Chanu, Thongam Kunjarani Chanu, Laishram Sushmita Chanu and Kshetrimayum Silky Devi kept Manipur’s hopes of rich medal haul in the competition.

Venika beat Aryaa of Kerala in the second round of the 38kg category to book her spot in the quarterfinals, while Apsara outpunched Janhavi (Maharashtra) 4-1 in the 42kg event for place in the last four. Bidya Maisnam, meanwhile, dominated her West Bengal opponent Prirona 5-0 in their 46kg bout. Graviya (48kg), however, was given a walkover. Also who eased into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 margin win were Ethoibi Chanu (50kg), Thoithoi Chanu (52kg), Sushmita Chanu (57kg) and Silky Devi (60kg), while Kunjarani Chanu overcame Harmeet of Telangana.
