UCM-led protests against Art 371A extension continue
IMPHAL2nf Sep: Under the aegis of United Committee Manipur (UCM), sit-in-protests were staged at various places along Tiddim road from Keishampat to Ghari on Sunday against the Government of India’s ethnic based policy in the backdrop of Naga peace talk and the move for extension of Article 371 (A) and 6th Schedule in the state.
One of the protests at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai was jointly organised by IRYC and SRWC while another one at Keishamthong Moirangningthou Leirak was organised by Women Welfare Association. Local Meira Paibi and club also organised similar protest at Keishamthong Top Leirak.
Meira Paibi groups of Konjeng Hajari Leikai and Kwakeithel Khawairakpam Leikai also staged similar protest jointly at Konjeng Hajari Leikai. Meira Paibi and local club also organised sit-in-protest at Kwakeithel Khawairakpam Leikai.
Similar protest demonstrations were also organised at Sega Road Thouda Bhabok Leikai, Sagolband Thingom community hall, Sega Road Takhellambam Leikai, Kwakeithel bazar, Kwakeithel Thounaojam Awang Leikai, Kwakeithel Thounaojam Makha Leikai and at Ghari Awang Leikai.
At all the protest venues, UCM leaders explained reason for launching the protest and appealed to people to remain firm in protecting the state’s territorial integrity and restoration of peace and harmony among different communities.
UCM general secretary Kh Athouba said that caste system is not practiced in Manipur since time immemorial and hence this system should not be applied in the state under any circumstances though it is widely practiced in mainland India. He also said that the Central government should not take any action which could divide people on ethnic line and extension of Article 371A and 6th Schedule in the backdrop of Framework Agreement.
