NEROCA pip LoneStar to stay top

CHRONICLE BUREAU
IMPHAL, 6th May: NEROCA FC rode on Thangjam Saran’s late goal to maintain their grip at the top of the final round table of the Second Division League. The home team prevailed over LoneStar Kashmir Football Club at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium on Saturday. This was NEROCA’s third straight home match win and the hosts stayed one point clear at the top with 14 points against Southern Samity who kept pressure on the state club with 13 points following their 3-1 victory over Kenkre FC on April 4.

Fateh Hyderabad AFC and Delhi United are equal on six points but the former occupy third spot on goal difference. Both coaches made three changes but the substitutions had little impact as NEROCA and LoneStar Kashmir both wasted almost the entire 90 minutes until the hosts rose to the contest in the 85th minute and eventually tilted the scales in their favour.

With the clock inching towards the final minute, the game finally burst into life when the home team’s persistent efforts paid off courtesy of a penalty conversion. NEROCA were awarded the penalty kick in the dying minutes and Thangjam Saran stepped up and calmly did the needful from the spot with a brilliant shot that ensured his side gained all three points to stay at the top. NEROCA next play away against Delhi United on April 14.
