Be serious on NRC: Hericoun to Govt
IMPHAL,6th Aug: Maintaining that negligence on the part of the government and generosity of the native people have led to the rise in influx of migrants in the state, Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN) has urged the government to be serious on National Register of Citizens and update the list as done by Assam. In a statement, HERICOUN vice president Laishram Sanajaoba Meetei asked the state government to constitute Manipur State Population Commission in order to save the indigenes. The government should also raise objection to passing of the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 through logical reason and holding cabinet meeting.
In order to ensure that the objective of Manipur People Bill 2018 is achieved, the government should also take up necessary measures. Taking up relevant measures at right time will not only aid in controlling law and order situation but it will also help in promoting socio-economic condition of the state, Sanajaoba said, while reminding the foreigner issue of 1980 and the agreement signed between the government and All Manipur Students’ Co-ordinating Committee (AMSCoC) on August 5, 1980.
Sanajaoba also pointed out that the state government is responsible for stopping the inflow of migrants into the state. The government should take the matter seriously and no stone should be left unturned for protecting the native people. However, it would be wrong to leave the responsibility on the shoulder of the government alone. The general public should also play their role in preventing infiltration of non-locals from other states as well as Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, he maintained.
