Barak bridge repaired, traffic on NH-37 resumes

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL, 10th July: Vehicular traffic along the Imphal-Jiribam section of National Highway-37 resumed following completion of repairing work on Barak Bailey Bridge around 4 pm Tuesday. The said structure got damaged on July 8 when one of the panels snapped as a loaded truck tried to cross it. Though lighter vehicles were allowed to take the adjacent bridge, heavy trucks were put on hold at both ends of the bridge for the past few days.

It is informed that the repair work was carried out under the supervision of senior engineer M Kalita of BIPL Company, which is a construction firm engaged by the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). On minute examination of the condition of the bridge after the first few vehicles passed through the repaired structure, loaded trucks stranded on the Jiribam side as well as those heading outside the state were allowed to take the same route.

Prior to allowing movement of the vehicles, a joint team of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers & Motor Workers’ Union and Imphal-Silchar Road Bus Owners’ Union went to the spot to oversee the repair works. Representative of Tamenglong District Motor Workers’ Union were also present during the inspection.
