IMPHAL, 11th June: Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Monday carried out a drive against use of plastic bags below 50 micron and seized several such plastic carry-bags.
More than 20 officials of the board conducted the drive at Masjid Road, MG Avenue, Alu Galli and Thangal Keithel areas.
Speaking to media persons regarding the drive, MPCB environmental engineer Premkanta Khagokpam informed that the drive was carried out under the instruction of board chairman MLA L Radhakishore. Polythene bags below the thickness of 50 microns will be seized and shops selling or using such bags are also liable to get penalty under Environment Protection Act.
Plastic bags below 50 micron, which have been banned under Plastic Rule 2016, are easily carried away by wind and scattered all around. It affects the aquatic life in water bodies and cattle on land surface. Moreover, burning these plastics emit toxic chemical which is not healthy for human health as well as other living beings, he said, while calling for cooperation from the public.
