IMPHAL, 28th May: Both AYMFA and VSAI on Monday emerged victorious on penalties to set up summit clash of the Sangai Trophy Veterans’ Football Championship 2018.
AYMFA, who were pitted against VSAC in the first semifinal, prevailed 6-5 over their opponents in a thrilling penalty shootout after both teams were goalless at regulation time.
In the shootout, Md Abdul Hakim, Th Ingobi, K Ranjit, Md Rahimuddon, Md Ilias Khan and Md Salamad converted their shots to send their team straight into the final. VSAC came up short in the contest as F Stephen Hmar, T Ginkhanlian, KK Sut, Nengsuanmung and James G Suantak were the scorers in a losing cause.
The second semifinal too had to be decided by spot kicks after VSAI and FC Imphal played out a 1-1 stalemate at the end of regulation time.
FC Imphal started brightly with an early goal through Kh Khrishna, who found the back of the net only two minutes into the game. However, VSAI recovered in a matter of 11 minutes when K Khellen struck in the equaliser in the 13th minute as both sides failed to break the deadlock in the remaining minutes, resulting in the penalty kicks.
The two squads were separated by a goal in the tense shootout where VSAI delivered on five of their attempts courtesy of K Khelen, P Romesh, Gaiphulung, Kh Bonomali and M Devananda for their place in the final. FC Imphal, on the other hand, converted four shots through A Jayenta, N Surchandra, N Itocha and M Shyamsunder.
AYMFA and VSAI will clash for the title on Thursday, May 31.
