Police-protesters stand-off disrupts mission
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 15th May:
A brief stand-off occurred between police personnel and the people of Khundrakpam constituency when the latter prevented entry of government officials who had come to inaugurate the “Go to Village” mission at Uyumpok village located in the constituency on Tuesday.
The blockade was carried out by the locals as part of the agitations being undertaken by the JAC against the Unnatural Shifting of Imphal East District Hospital from Sagolmang.
At about 9 am Tuesday, women of Uyumpok, Keibi, Tiger Camp, Heikak Mapan and other areas of Sagolmang came out and blocked the roads by burning tyres, placing boulders, tree trunks and other large objects.
Upon receiving information that staffers of Imphal East Deputy Commissioner, SDO, SDS and officials from other departments concerned, who were on their way to inaugurate the “Go to village” mission at Uyumpok community hall, were prevented entry, Manipur Police personnel immediately rushed to the area and tried to lift the blockade.
During the process, a brief stand-off ensued between the police personnel and the protesting women. Nonetheless, the police finally managed to clear the way.
Later, under strict security arrangements, the programme of “Go to Village” mission was conducted at Uyumpok. The programme was attended by many locals of the constituency who also interacted with the officials concerned.
However, after the conclusion of the programme the officials were again prevented from leaving by the women of nearby areas. At long last, they (officials) were safely escorted back from the area by a security convoy.
