DESAM seals Edn (S) office, demands minister’s resignation
STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 7th MAy:
Alleging that Directorate of Education (S) has failed to put into action the transfer and utilisation orders of teachers for filling up the vacancies of teachers in all schools under the directorate, volunteers of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) put the Directorate’s office at Lamphelpat under lock and key on Monday.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the office lock-down stir, DESAM general secretary Sheetal Oinam described as unfortunate that every time the Directorate issues a transfer and utilisation order for utilising teachers at schools located at both hills and valley, DO letters from MLAs start piling up at the office table of the directorate from the next day, thus compelling the directorate to issue cancellation orders again.
Maintaining that the directorate has become incapable of performing its duties, Sheetal said that the volunteers of DESAM decided to close down office of the directorate indefinitely. The current government portrays itself as a hard working government through media when in reality it is riddled with nepotism and favouritism. As such, the future of the students in the state is bleak, Sheetal said.
Recalling that DESAM had earlier submitted a written statement to both the Education Minister and Education (S) Director to follow through with the transfer and utilisation orders, Sheetal said that the written statement also requested for initiating disciplinary actions against those teachers who do not comply with the orders.
However, Sheetal said that no action has been taken by the state government or by the Directorate in this regard. Furthermore, as the Education Minister is more interested in portraying a good image on media platforms, he seems to be unaware of the flaws in his department and this clearly shows his attitude towards education. Thus, the education Minister must resign for failure to carry out his constitutional obligations, Sheetal contended.
Sheetal then said that DESAM is will be launching more intense agitation till the state government gives a positive response on the matter. He then urged the MLAs to not hinder the education sector by submitting DO letters every time an order is issued. Education (S) Director must perform his duties responsibly, Sheetal added.
